Toch zijn meer dan dertig van zijn werken verfilmd, o.a. door Akira Kurosawa en Takashi Miike. Sinds 1988 wordt de Yamamoto Shūgorō Prijs jaarlijks uitgereikt aan de best vertelde nieuwe roman.
