Destouches, 1894-1961) debuteerde in 1932 met de roman die nog altijd zijn beroemdste is: <em>Reis naar het einde van de nacht<\/em>. Het verhaal over hoofdpersoon Bardamu was voor een belangrijk deel gebaseerd op eigen ervaringen: in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, in het koloniale Afrika en bij zijn werk als arts. In 1936 verscheen C\u00e9line\u2019s andere grote roman <em>Dood op krediet<\/em>. Zijn verdere werken werden veel minder bekend, en in toenemende mate gekleurd door een destructief nihilisme en een mateloze woede. De publicatie van pamfletten met antisemitische strekking noopten C\u00e9line in 1944 te vluchten naar Duitsland en later naar Denemarken. In 1951 keerde hij terug naar Frankrijk, nam zijn werk als arts weer op en wijdde zich verder aan zijn schrijverschap.
