Binnen enkele jaren na verschijning was het door heel Europa in vertaling beschikbaar, ook in Nederland, waar het al in 1833\u001e\u0016\u0017\u0017 uitkwam. Daarna volgden nog diverse andere vertaalde edities, de laatste in 1911\u001e\u001d\u001e\u001e. Het was dus hoog tijd voor een moderne Nederlandse editie van dit werk.
