Van 1966 tot en met 1968 woonde hij in New York, aan de Riverside Drive, net als zijn personage Gesine in de roman waaraan hij daar begon te werken. <em>Jahrestage<\/em> verscheen in vier delen, waarvan het laatste vanwege gezondheidsklachten en een writer\u2019s block pas in 1983 het licht zag. Johnson woonde sinds 1974 op het eiland Sheppey in Zuidoost-Engeland.
