J\u00f3zef Wittlin (1896\u20131976) werd geboren in Galici\u00eb, destijds deel van Oostenrijk- Hongarije, en groeide op in Lw\u00f3w. Met zijn vriend Joseph Roth meldde hij zich in 1916 als vrijwilliger bij het Oostenrijkse leger. Hij werkte onder meer als tolk in een krijgsgevangenkamp voor Italianen. Na zijn studie was hij eerst werkzaam als leraar en daarna als schrijver, dichter en vertaler. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog moest hij door zijn joodse afkomst zijn geboorteland ontvluchten. Samen met zijn gezin vestigde hij zich in New York, waar hij tot zijn overlijden bleef wonen en werken.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
