Malicious pleasure <\/em>voel ik \u2013 ik kan het niet anders zeggen, een intens genoegen, deels ook doordat ik me voorstel wat Theresa May moet voelen\u00a0\u2013 wanneer ik nu naar Boris Johnson kijk. Als een staatsvorm voldoende gecompliceerd is opgebouwd loopt ook een egotist als Johnson erop stuk.<\/p>\n

‘s avond laat lees ik het flauwste boek dat ik ooit las in de mooiste uitgave: W. E. Bowman’s The Ascent of\u00a0 Rum Doodle<\/em>, in een gelimiteerde uitgave van Hatchard’s boekhandel in London, nummer 1.823 van 2.000.<\/p>\n

Het is een Britse flauwheid die je eigenlijk maar net<\/em> aan kunt, een parodie op de bergbeklimverhalen uit de jaren ’50, met dit type humor:<\/p>\n

“I scribbled a message:<\/p>\n

‘Please tell me what to do’<\/p>\n

I wrapped this around the neck of a champagne bottle, tied the line round it and lowered it into the crevasse.<\/p>\n

I gave them five minutes to reply and hauled up the line. The message read: ‘Send down another bottle.'”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Het is moeilijk te beschrijven wat voor flauwigheid dit precies is. Het begint al met de route finder<\/em> Humphrey Jungle die tijdens de voorbereidende gesprekken steeds telegrammen stuurt dat hij de verkeerde afslag heeft genomen of op een verkeerde trein gestapt is. Een soort navigator<\/em> dat UK nu door de Brexit moet leiden: Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson. Zelfs zijn naam heeft iets onmiddellijk kolderieks. Hij pfeffelt zijn eilandgenoten de penarie in. Gaandeweg wordt de beklimming van de Rum Doodle steeds meer een prachtig beeld voor de Brexit: welgemutst, met een verzameling totale malloten een klus klaren die te groot is, van aanvang af al niet goed doordacht, begeleid door montere debielen die steeds aan iets anders denken dan het belang van de groep. Lachen!<\/p>\n

Als het niet zo droevig was. De meeste Britten die ik ken gaan letterlijk huilen als ik erover begin.<\/p>\n

Een diepe liefde voor bijna alles wat Engels is doet mij op de punt van mijn stoel de ontwikkelingen volgen. Kom terug! Of zoek tenminste een waardig team!<\/p>\n
