Best vreemd, hoe gauw je woorden in je vocabulaire kunt incorporeren op een manier dat je je vervolgens niet meer voor kunt stellen dat je het ooit zonder ze moest doen. Toen ik 5,5 jaar geleden aan mijn filosofiestudie begon en het vak Metafysica moest volgen, durfde ik de eerste twee maanden tegen niemand te zeggen dat ik geen idee had wat ‘metafysica’ betekende. Iedereen zat maar te knikken en ijverig notities te makken, alsof de betekenis van het woord metafysica hen a priori gegeven was, net als de betekenis van a priori, alsook dialectiek, hermeneutiek, epistemologie, enzovoorts.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Toch houd ik van bijzondere woorden. Sinds ik bekend maakte dat mijn tweede bundel ‘De eerste letter’ gaat heten vinden mijn vrienden het grappig om zodra ze mij zien te roepen ‘Kom, laten we het spel De eerste letter<\/em> spelen’. Iedereen noemt dan om de beurt zo snel mogelijk een woord of een naam met de letter A; imaginaire punten krijg je bij een origineel of moeilijk woord. Het gaat ongeveer zo:<\/div>\n

Shunning Latinate constructions, I choose
instead the simple Anglo-Saxon
monosyllabic words, simple words.
Why utilize what I can use? I want to
make sense, not fabricate matter for
comprehension. Call it a fear, a phobia,
but my skin crawls when I hear pseudo-
words like functionality or paradigm.<\/p>\n

In the beginning, we are told, was the Word.
and He spoke the world into being with
“Let there be light!” not “Illuminate this
cosmological nothingness into existence.”
Imagine Matthew penning, “The Messiah
grew copiously lachrymose” instead of
“Jesus wept.”<\/p>\n

As I work on my own humble creations,
I seek clean, clear words, simple ideas:
Leave pomegranates, gorgonzola, and
osculation to other more erudite lovers;
I\u2019ll tell you, in no uncertain terms, I
love you. I will feed you apples and
cheese. We will share one sweet kiss.<\/p>\n
