Since science has begun to distrust general explanations and solutions that are not sectorial and specialized, the grand challenge for literature is to be capable of weaving together the various branches of knowledge, the various \u2018codes,\u2019 into a manifold and multifaceted vision of the world<\/em>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Italo Calvino, <em>Six Memos for the Next Millennium<\/em>, vertaald\u00a0uit het Italiaans, in\u00a0het Engels, door Patrick Creagh\u00a0(<em>Harvard University Press<\/em> (1988;p. 112)).<\/p>\n<p>De teksten uit <em>Six Memos<\/em> werden geschreven voor een serie lezingen die Italo Calvino\u00a0in het najaar van 1985 zou uitspreken aan de universiteit van Harvard. De\u00a0avond voor hij van Itali\u00eb naar Amerika zou vliegen, stierf hij aan de gevolgen van een hersenbloeding.\u00a0 Van de zes voordrachten die Calvino zou houden vond zijn vrouw, Esther, er vijf\u00a0op zijn bureau.
